A dream location
The Furnas Golf Course is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of São Miguel, one of the Azores islands, and only 25 min. drive from Ponta Delgada. The golf course is close to the beautiful Furnas Lake, one of the largest and most attractive lakes on the island, famous for its hot springs.
This glorious view also takes in the stunning Cedars valley, which is famous for its tropical vegetation, and mineral water: all place names clearly demonstrating the volcanic origins of these islands, which offer the ideal climate for playing golf all the year round.
The oldest course of the Azores
The original 9-hole golf course of Furnas, in Azores, was completed in 1936 to the design of MacKenzie Ross, who is probably best known for the Estoril Golf Course near Lisbon and for his work in restoring, from near ruin, the world famous Ailsa and Arran courses at Turnberry in Scotland.
Extended in 1992 under the supervision of the British golf course designers, Cameron Powell Associates, the full 18-hole golf course of Furnas is now a par 72. There is no doubt that MacKenzie Ross would be delighted to see that the new 9 holes are so in harmony with the spirit and style of the original golf course that it is becoming increasingly difficult to “spot the join.”
A vegetation you will find nowhere else
Furnas golf course, in Azores, set amid stands of majestic Japanese cedars and with fiendishly contoured greens, is quite gentle in nature but is a genuine test of skill and finesse. Furnas Golf Course has all the playing characteristics of a Scottish course.
Practically every fairway is undulating, requiring all types of shots, and the smallish plateaux greens are excellent, wickedly contoured and full of borrows.
Most of the greens are slightly elevated from the fairway and the bunkers do not have sand traps as European and American golfers might know them, but instead a very rough kind of gravel with many pebbles.
